About Dawson Township, Ontario

Dawson Township is a beautiful rural township that is located on the most western part of Manitoulin Island called the Unorganized West Manitoulin District. Meldrum Bay is the one and only community located in Dawson Township and has a population of approximately 160 (2011). Meldrum Bay was named after a town in Scotland and was settled in the 1870s. From there it grew into a popular North Channel centre for commercial fishing and lumbering. Today, one of the main employers in the area is Lafarge Canada, a dolomite quarry. Meldrum Bay is located about one hour west of Gore Bay via Highway 540.
